Artistic Statement

I dance to understand my identity while exploring the facets of the human experience. I cultivate kinesthetic awareness through athletic-inspired movement in contemporary, jazz, ballet, and tap. Performing gives me a feeling similar to the one I experience while walking by an apartment complex – a sense of wonder at observing the many lives being lived inside the windows. I am able to jump through those windows every time I am on stage. It helps me learn about the world, and impact the roles I have as a daughter, sister, best friend, student, and teacher.

Alongside dance performance is my passion for education. Every teacher in my life has contributed a puzzle piece of knowledge to my development, and I hope to positively influence my dancers in a similar light. My scientific approach to dance education – understanding the mechanisms of safe movement – reduces the chance of injury and leads into a greater somatic awareness. Emphasizing critical thinking and recognizing the biopsychosocial model enhances technical training that establishes a holistic base for the dancer. I believe that adding the historical and social elements of dance genres within the classroom coincide with the importance of a strong, open, and safe dance education.

Dance has led me to become a life-long student. As a recent graduate, I researched my interests which included dancer burnout, perfectionism, intrinsic motivation, and the structure of collegiate dance performance programs. I strive to build upon my knowledge to create positive changes in the areas of education, performance, and administration.

The ability to explore my identity and all the passions that encompass my goals are due to the profession I have dedicated myself to. My hard-working nature stems from my roots – my family shaped me into becoming an imaginative and determined individual. In my artistic journey, dance has brought me across the United States and into my current residence in Edinburgh, Scotland.
